He who has knowledge uses few words; a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Even a fool, when he is silent, is counted wise, and he who shuts his lips is counted as a man of understanding.
Proverbs 17:27-28 MKJV
I read these verses today and I noted the note I wrote to myself:
“TRY HARDER”
I have struggled so often in life with not speaking what I think. In this day and age, we are taught to “speak our truth,” to “say what’s on our minds,” to “not hold back.” And if we do choose silence, we are considered weak and nice or, my favorite, a doormat.
I think we need to rethink silence. Silence is not always indicative of being okay or not caring. Sometimes, silence speaks volumes and sometimes, silence is better than lashing out.
In Ecclesiastes, the author discusses how to everything in life, there is a season. There is a time for everything.
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:7b-8 MKJV
I believe, as Christians, our time of silence should not extend to placating those around us. Being judicious and careful with our words is important, but silence for the sake of making others happy and less threatened by our hope in Jesus Christ should not be our main go-to.
GOD is the supreme King of the Universe. He sent His Son to die for us, so we might have eternal life. Should we not speak of the amazing hope we have in Jesus?
The truth of His love for us is becoming illegal to speak of in some countries.
My high school graduation banned prayer because it offended a single student.
I am tired of tiptoeing around feelings. I know one should speak in love, but when truth and love become illegal and considered lies and hate. . .
Father GOD,
Show us how to walk in love and share Your truth.
This world is so broken.
We are in dire need of healing.
Give us the words.
Give us openings to talk about YOU!
Lead us into Your will. Unite us with Your will.
Deliver us from evil.
This world is Yours.
All glory and honor belong to You.
In the Holy Name of Jesus, we ask these things.
Amen.
Shalom.
